What is a keyboard layout? (with 90+ list of them)
Many times we hear about something called keyboard layout. Most of the time it’s about the physical keyboard that we have. But is it just the way it looks? It is only the way your keyboard is designed? Or is it something more?
Once you understand what a layout is you can benefit quite a bit from it. Especially if you want to learn fast typing. Layouts are something extremely effective when it comes to typing. They decide quite a lot and influence even your typing style.
What is a keyboard layout?
This is the question that we need to start with. Lots of people think that a keyboard layout is just the way keys are placed on their keyboard. And they are right to some extent. But it’s not only that.
You can change your keyboard layout without changing the order of your keys. Your keyboard will still have the same (visual) layout but it will behave completely differently.
A keyboard layout is the order of keys on your keyboard. But it doesn’t mean that it’s tied to the keyboard’s factory settings or looks. You can change your layout without changing the order of physical keys. That way you can use different layouts with the same keyboard (once you learn them)
That makes the layout a very interesting part of typing. Think about it – this small detail determines how you type. When you learn your layout you get some habits that work only on this particular layout. This is then a very important thing to know about.
A keyboard layout is a tool and it’s an opportunity for you. This small thing can make you learn faster in the long run.
Why are there different keyboard layouts?
Why isn’t there just one keyboard layout? Why do you need so many?
Because people aren’t the same. Even the most basic example – there are many countries in the world. All of those countries have their own keyboard layout. Even if it’s just a small change in the standard QWERTY – that’s what they need.
For example, there is a layout called AZERTY. It is a modified QWERTY for the French language. That’s simply better for them to type. If you want to know why and a bit more about this layout you can read my article – ARTICLE QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY
Ending on the typing preferences. I use a layout that I use because I prefer to use it. It’s way better to type for me – way easier and more comfortable. That’s because I don’t have to move my hands around nearly as much as with QWERTY.
If you’re curious about what layout I use – it is Dvorak. You can read my review on this layout here – ARTICLE ABOUT DVORAK
People have different needs so there are different keyboard layouts. It’s like cars – some sport, some comfort, some luxurious, some practical. All for people with different needs. Almost all countries have their own keyboard layout.
Layouts are very important for typing. Many times it happens (at least happened to me) that you press a key or a shortcut, and nothing happens. So you look for it on the internet, you think that something’s wrong with the software or the computer. But no – it was just a keyboard layout that changed.
What is the most common keyboard layout?
There is one layout that’s used everywhere. Even if not this exact one people use a version of it. You most probably have this exact layout on your keyboard. Do you know what it’s called?
The most common layout in the world is QWERTY. Most people use this layout. Even if not standard QWERTY they use a version of it. That’s because of the origin of the keyboard and layout. QWERTY in many forms and modifications has spread across the globe.
I made a whole article about the origin of QWERTY. With the history and the rest of this layout. If you’re interested you can read it here – ARTICLE ABOUT QWERTY
This layout has become a standard in making a keyboard. Every company makes their products with this layout. And most probably it will stay that way.
What is the best keyboard layout?
This is an ongoing debate. Many people have their own pick and you will have one soon too. There are many advantages and disadvantages of every layout. And there are also personal preferences. Some people just like one layout over the other for no particular reason.
That’s why you should try at least three different layouts to see which one you like the most. I recommend starting with QWERTY, Colemak, and Dvorak. I made a comparison between them. You can read it here – ARTICLE QWERTY VS COLEMAK VS DVORAK
One of those layouts you already know. So you only have two left to try.
There is no one „best” layout. There are many advantages to each one of them. Many people like one over the other just because it feels better to type for them. But if I were to choose one for beginners to look at it would be Dvorak and Colemak. There are a few differences between them but both are really good.
Now don’t get me wrong – keyboard layout is important but it doesn’t mean that it’s a decision for life. Yes, you will have to learn touch typing from the beginning. But once you know the process and have the right tools – it’s not nearly as hard as you think.
You can learn a new layout at any point you want. So don’t spend too much time thinking about this.
If you’re really scared about having to start from scratch – check out my touch typing course. You will learn many things from there and start liking the process. I want you to actually enjoy learning touch typing. If you’re interested you can read more about my course here – MY TOUCH TYPING COURSE
